🧠 Is It Safe Inside Your Head?
Your nervous system is always scanning for danger.
Not just out in the world…
But deep inside your own mind.
Every few seconds, it asks:
“Am I safe?”
And it listens closely to your thoughts for the answer.
Even if your life looks calm on the outside, your inner world might be telling a very different story.
So ask yourself:
What is your nervous system hearing when it listens to your thoughts?
Are your thoughts steady and supportive—or stressed, critical, or hopeless?
Let’s look at what I call Green, Yellow, and Red thoughts—a quick way to understand how your internal state and inner voice are connected.
🟢 GREEN: Steady, Supportive Thoughts
“I’ve been through worse—I’ll figure this out.”
“This is hard, but I’m allowed to rest.”
“I don’t have to be perfect to be okay.”
Green thoughts come from a regulated nervous system.
They’re grounded, flexible, and hopeful.
🟡 YELLOW: Anxious, Threat-Focused Thoughts
“What if I mess this up?”
“They’re probably against me.”
“I should be doing more.”
These thoughts come from a stressed state.
They tend to carry distortions like:
Catastrophizing
Mind-reading
All-or-nothing thinking
Harsh self-criticism
In Yellow, the brain is on alert, scanning for danger—even when none is present.
🔴 RED: Hopeless, Shut-Down Thoughts
“I can’t do this.”
“No one cares.”
“What’s the point?”
Red thoughts come from a shut-down state—when your system feels overwhelmed and disconnected.
They don’t reflect truth. They reflect depletion.
🧠 Here’s the part most people miss:
Your thoughts are not just noise in your head.
They are messages your nervous system takes seriously.
If your inner dialogue is full of alarm or despair, your body reacts as if you’re under threat.
And when you’re in a stressed or shut-down state, your thoughts become less accurate and more negative.
👉 The fastest way to clearer thinking is not to argue with your thoughts—
It’s to shift your state.
When you calm the body, the mind follows.
Green thoughts live in a Green body.
✅ TRY THIS: The ABC Reset
Use this when you notice yourself spiraling or stuck in anxious, critical, or heavy thoughts:
A – AWARE
Notice what’s happening in your mind.
Are your thoughts fast, fearful, or blaming? That’s Yellow.
Are they heavy, hopeless, or numb? That’s Red.
Examples:
🟡 “What if everything goes wrong?”
🟡 “I should be doing more.”
🔴 “I can’t do this.”
🔴 “Nothing matters.”
These are signs your nervous system has left Green.
B – BREAK
Interrupt the loop by stepping out—physically or mentally:
🚪 Step out of the room or away from the conversation
🎧 Change your input: music, silence, nature sounds
🧠 Redirect your attention: look around, count colors, ground in the present
This clears space to reset.
C – CALM
Now send your system a message of safety:
💨 Double the length of each exhale as you breathe
🤲 Put a hand on your heart
💬 Say to yourself:
“I’m having the thought that I’m not safe.”
“I’m having the thought that no one cares.”
“I’m having the thought that it’s all too much.”
You are not the thought—you are the one observing it.
That space is where your power begins.
🌱 So next time your thoughts feel heavy or hostile, don’t just argue with them.
Shift your state.
Return to Green.
Then listen again.
That’s where the truth lives.
That’s where your clarity returns.
That’s where your next step becomes clear.
