Our nervous system is constantly scanning for danger. It doesn’t just react to major crises—it’s attuned to the subtle signals in our everyday lives. And right now, with so much happening in the world, it’s no surprise that many of us feel on edge.
The truth is, there are three triggers that set our nervous system off the fastest. I call them L I T:
-
Lack of predictability
-
Isolation
-
Trapped
When one of these gets activated, our body reacts automatically. Stress hormones rise, thinking narrows, and calm feels out of reach.
Why LIT Matters
Think about the last time your plans changed suddenly (lack of predictability), or you felt cut off from support (isolation), or stuck in a situation you couldn’t control (trapped).
Even if you weren’t in physical danger, your nervous system likely flipped into a survival state. That’s because the brain is wired to treat unpredictability, disconnection, and loss of freedom as threats.
Living in a world full of uncertainty, rapid change, and disconnection means our systems are often getting LIT up without us realizing it.
The Remedy: The 3 C’s
The good news is, you can bring your nervous system back into balance. The antidote to LIT lies in three simple anchors:
✅ Certainty → Give your brain patterns it can rely on. Even small routines like a morning ritual, a set work rhythm, or a predictable bedtime help calm the nervous system.
🤝 Connection → We are bonding mammals. Whether through a text to a friend, a hug from someone safe, or a meaningful conversation, connection signals to the nervous system that we are not alone.
🗝️ Choice → Few things are more regulating than remembering you still have agency. Options—no matter how small—remind your brain and body that you’re not trapped.
Applying This in Daily Life
When the world feels chaotic, try asking yourself:
-
Where can I create a little more predictability today?
-
Who can I connect with, even for a few minutes?
-
What choices are still mine to make right now?
By focusing on certainty, connection, and choice, you send powerful signals of safety back to your nervous system.
Closing Reflection
The world may light us up with unpredictability, disconnection, and pressure. But we are not powerless. We can choose to steady ourselves, to return to calm, and to reclaim presence in our lives.
